Photoshop is a graphics editing program developed and published by Adobe Systems Incorporated and is part of the Adobe Suite. The Adobe suite started at CS1 and the current version of Adobe is at CS5, which was launched on 12 April 2010 and supports 27 languages. Adobe Systems Incorporated started in 1987, with Thomas Knoll, a PhD student at the University of Michigan. He started writing a program on his Macintosh plus. Adobe software is made for both Mac and Windows based computers. Most graphics design companies have now incorporated the Adobe design and mostly use this over many other softwares such as corel painter.

Adobe Photoshop images and graphical designs are saved in a format known as .psd (photoshop document) which allows file saving up to 30,000 pixels, PSB (Photoshop Big) format however , also known as “large document format” within Photoshop, is the extension of PSD format and allows images up to 300,000 pixels to be saved. Some Adobe programs are not backwards compatible, this means that if you save a document in a previous version you can open it with a newer version but if you save a document in a newer version you cannot open it in a previous version of Adobe. Photoshop is a popular program which means that the .PSD format is widely used, and it is supported to some extent by most competing software. The .PSD file format can be exported to and from Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, and After Effects, to make professional standard DVDs and provide non-linear editing and special effects services, such as backgrounds, textures, and so on, for television, film, and the Web.

Adobe Photoshop allows plugins to be installed through the program or through the copying and pasting of files into a specific folder for the Adobe Photoshop program. Many users now create their own brushes, styles and many more plugins that are compatible with Adobe Photoshop.
